Finding the light

Observe direction, contrast and the edges of a frame. This sample creative course uses a real editorial photograph, not an endorsement by the pictured person.
Start with direction.
Place a simple object beside a window. Watch which side receives light and which side falls into shadow. Turn the object a little. A small change in angle can reveal a different edge, texture or shape.
Look at the edges.
Before taking a photograph, look around the frame. A bright distraction near the edge may pull attention away from the subject. Move your viewpoint or simplify the background while keeping the natural direction of light.
Try a small exercise.
Photograph the same object from three positions: facing the window, beside it and with the window behind it. Keep the object and setting consistent. Compare the shadow edges and write one sentence about which version best describes its shape.
