The lesson

A short lesson with an idea, a small exercise and a quick check-in.

Designing with intention

Lesson 01 / Begin with purpose

A seated creative works at a yellow desk against a vivid blue wall beside an empty red frame.

Start with a clear purpose, choose a useful hierarchy and turn the first draft into a simple system. Each lesson includes one small practical exercise.

Begin with purpose.

Before choosing a visual detail, describe what someone needs to understand or do. A clear purpose helps you choose what belongs in the work and what can be left out.

Give the important thing room.

Hierarchy is the order in which someone notices information. Size, spacing, contrast and placement work together. Make the first step clear, then let each supporting detail earn its place.

Try a small exercise.

Choose a familiar page. Write its main purpose in one sentence. Sketch one change that makes the purpose easier to understand. Compare the two versions with a person who has not seen your brief.

A quick check: What should guide the first design decision?
